PNG is the classic format for transparency, but it is inefficient: a WEBP file with the same alpha channel is usually 40–70% smaller. That difference is noticeable on any site that loads several icons, illustrations or product cut-outs.

This converter keeps the alpha channel intact — unlike a PNG-to-JPG conversion, you will not get white boxes around your graphics — and it lets you choose lossless or lossy encoding through the quality setting.

How to use this tool

  1. Add your PNG files using drag and drop, the file browser or a clipboard paste.
  2. Set quality to 100 for a near-lossless WEBP, or lower it for a smaller file.
  3. Press Convert to re-encode the images in your browser.
  4. Download the WEBP results — transparency is preserved.

Frequently asked questions

Does WEBP support transparency?

Yes. WEBP has a full alpha channel, so transparent areas of your PNG survive the conversion, unlike converting to JPG.

How much space will I save?

For photographs and gradients expect 40–70%. Flat-colour graphics sometimes compress less, but rarely end up larger than the original PNG.

Can WEBP be used in a CSS or HTML file?

Absolutely — WEBP works anywhere PNG does, including background-image, <img> tags and favicons, in every current browser.

Is quality 100 lossless?

Quality 100 produces a visually indistinguishable, very high quality lossy file. The saving over PNG is still substantial while remaining far smaller than a true lossless WEBP.

Do you store my images?

No. Conversion runs in your browser and the files are released as soon as you close the page.
